Hands-On Assignment – Create, Export, and Sign a BIM Document

You’ve now covered the core features of the Docs module – editing sections, structuring documents, importing content, using smart fields, embedding rich content, assigning responsibility, managing permissions, using AI, working with tables, and exporting with eSignatures. This assignment brings it all together in one quick, practical exercise.

The goal is simple: create a new project, add a document, work through the content, export it as a PDF, and apply an eSignature. The whole thing takes about two minutes. It’s designed to build your confidence by proving to yourself that you can complete an end-to-end document workflow in Plannerly from start to signed output.

You have multiple ways to create your first document – from scratch, using a template from the template library, using AI to generate content, or importing an existing Word document. In the video, the BIM execution plan (BEP) template is used as the starting point, which gives you a ready-made structure with sections you can edit and build on immediately.

Once the document is in place, you can edit sections, assign them to team members, and progress them through the shared and published states. When you’re happy with the content, export the document as a PDF – add a cover page, select the BEP document, and create the export. Then copy it across to the contracts tab, add your signature, and you’ve got a signed, structured project document ready to go.

This exercise reinforces everything you’ve learned in the Docs module and gives you a complete mini-workflow that mirrors what you’ll do on real projects. The next topic in the basic course covers the Scope module – arguably the most important part of project management in Plannerly.

Assignment steps

  1. Create a new project – if you already have an account, create a new project in your workspace. If you don’t have one yet, start a free account and set up your first project.
  2. Add your first document – choose one of the four methods: create from scratch, use a template (the BIM execution plan is a great starting point), generate with AI, or import a Word document.
  3. Edit the content – open a section and make some edits. Practice the editing skills you’ve learned – formatting text, adding content, or inserting a smart field.
  4. Assign and progress sections – assign a section to a team member if you have others on the project. Move sections through the shared and published states to practise the approval workflow.
  5. Export as a PDF – go to “export file”, choose “document”, add a cover page and your BEP document, and hit create. Review the formatted PDF output.
  6. Copy to contracts – copy the document across to the contracts tab in your project.
  7. Add an eSignature – add your signature to the contract using the signature panel. Save, sign, and accept to complete the workflow.

Which template should I use for this assignment?

The video uses the BIM execution plan template, which is a good choice because it has a ready-made structure with multiple sections. But you can use any template, generate a document with AI, or even start from a blank document – the point is to practise the workflow from creation through to signed export.

What if I don’t have team members to assign sections to?

That’s fine. You can still progress sections through the shared and published states yourself. If you’d like to practise the full collaborative workflow later, you can invite team members to your project at any time.
