(VIDEOS) BIM Training – 8 videos recorded from a University BIM Management Course

In the eight BIM Training videos below we focus on the core BIM education and management skills taught on a group of advanced University BIM management programs.

We share the benefits of BIM, some of the common challenges that BIM Managers face, the BIM standards to use (ISO 19650) and we also introduce some BIM software that can help streamline the process.

1. BIM Training: INTRODUCTION

I learned a lot about BIM from trial and error, a bunch of crazy BIM experiments 🤪 and multiple failures! 😖

With more BIM education I continued to find amazing uses for a 3D model.

When I was a design-build contractor our team could understand an extra dimension with 4D planning, take quantities for faster estimating, render realistic pictures of the building before we started on site and hand over a higher quality deliverable to our client! 😍

It was also great because the BIM process could involve everyone right from the owner, through all of the engineering and design teams, us as the contractor and all of our subcontractors too.

I was so excited to optimize our entire design and construction workflow!! ????

The challenge HOWEVER was to understand how much BIM was required and who should do what BIM at what time.

2. BIM Training: How to define an EIR and BEP and more…

We discovered that it was critical to standardize the BIM process in order to eliminate as much rework and waste as possible.

This is a key reason why ISO 19650 is so important!

ISO 19650 is an information management standard to help our industry all speak the same planning, managing and controlling language ????

To comply with ISO 19650 you will need to create and manage many types of documents.

These ISO 19650 documents range from the OIR (Organizational Information Requirements), PIR (Project Information Requirements), AIR (Asset Information Requirement), EIR (Exchange Information Requirement), BEP (BIM Execution Plan), TIDPs (Task Information Delivery Plan), MIDP (Master Information Delivery Plan) and others…

In the video below we share how to create an EIR, BEP and other ISO 19650 documents all in the same place from templates available inside the Plannerly application.

3. BIM Training: Why, What, When, Who and How!

In the next video we share how to define requirements using the Level of Information Need framework.

We define the Geometry, Information and Documentation – basically answering these questions:

  • What are the goals – why use BIM in the first place?
  • What BIM is required?
  • When is the BIM needed?
  • Who is responsible to create the INFORMATION?
  • What checklist items are useful?
  • Etc…

Defining these requirements early, from templates, based on Level of Information Need and using visually compelling content is critical so that teams can be clear and agree on the requirements for each Information Delivery Milestone before starting work.

4. BIM Training: BIM Contracts with eSignature

When BIM requirements are defined it is not good enough to send them in an email.

The design and construction industry is very project-based and extremely contractual

We need to form contractually binding agreements ✍️

The Contract module makes this super simple.

You can build a BIM Contract and get approval using eSignature faster and more securely using this simple workflow:

5. BIM Training: BIM Task Schedule and Sequencing

Creating and clashing models multiple times is wasteful.

They say that doing the same thing and expecting different results is a sign of madness.

IT’S TIME TO STOP CLASH DETECTION and START CLASH AVOIDANCE!

To expedite this process tasks are auto generated for each Information Delivery Milestone (IDM).

6. BIM Training: Tracking BIM Task Progress

Do you like being asked continuously about the progress you are making on your to-do list?

Me neither ????

Here you will learn about an agile approach to BIM management.

Using simple task assignment  and drag and drop progress will notify project managers …so that you don’t have to ask OR be asked!

7. BIM Training: Verifying BIM Deliverables

If you don’t verify that work has been done BEFORE you make payment you might never get the BIM you asked for.

In the last video (before the summary) we share how to connect the BEP requirements directly to the BIM deliverables.

8. BIM Training: SUMMARY ????

Top BIM Managers know that BIM training and communication are critical success factor especially for achieving agreement and notably on a BIM enabled project.

To enhance communication, teams must speak the same language – this is helped by following standards like ISO 19650 and using a structured planning and control process.
