Use cases BIM execution plan

Use case - BIM execution plan

Write a BEP your teams actually read, agree and work to

A BIM execution plan (BEP) explains how a delivery team will manage information: who produces what, to what standard, with which tools, and how it meets the client's requirements. ISO 19650 asks for one with the tender and a confirmed one after appointment. In Plannerly you write it with your teams and keep it live.

Free plan, no card. Task teams never pay to join your project.

The problem

Your BEP won the tender. Now nobody reads it.

Sound familiar?

Copied from the last job, issued as a PDF

The BEP is written to win the work, copied from the last project, issued as a PDF and never opened again. By the time anyone checks the plan against the work, the two don't match. The four steps below keep it the plan everyone works to.

How it works

Stop writing a BEP nobody reads: start from the template, give each section an owner, agree it, keep it live

  1. Start from the template

Every BEP starts as a copy of the last one, wrong client name and all. Open an ISO 19650 BEP with the pre- and post-appointment sections in place, or import your own from Word, and let SmartFields fill in the project facts.

No blank page, no copy-paste errors
  2. Give every section an owner

One person ends up writing the whole thing. Assign each section to the person who knows it, choose which teams see each document, and keep comments and suggestions on the section, not in email.

Each section written by the team that knows it
  3. Agree it on the record

Silence isn't agreement. Share sections for review with a deadline, see who has read what, and accept or reject suggestions. Then publish it, export it, or send it for e-signature.

A BEP every team actually agreed
  4. Keep it live

The PDF from tender day is out of date within weeks. Version history shows what changed and when, the BEP exports with the scope's grid and timeline, and it becomes your next template.

One plan, still current after appointment

Free webinar replay - Episode 2

Watch a BEP reviewed and agreed by the teams that own it

Episode 2 builds the RACI on a real project, and the BEP is where the teams agree it: suggestions and comments on each section, a review deadline, read indicators, then a contract for each team. It runs about 45 minutes.

  • Assign each section to the team that owns it
  • Suggest, comment and review against a deadline
  • See who has read what, and what changed
  • Turn the agreed plan into a contract per team

Surviving ISO 19650 Information Requirements with AI

Build it. Connect it. Just ask Javis. Most owners aren't sure what to ask for, and requirements copied from the last job create work nobody needs. Three ways into your project's information requirements - build on the Plannerly API, connect your own AI with Plannerly MCP, or just ask Javis - on one structure your supply chain can check against.

Questions

BIM execution plan questions, answered

What is a BIM execution plan (BEP)?
A BIM execution plan (BEP) is the delivery team's plan for managing information on a project. It explains how the team will meet the client's information requirements: who is in the information management function, the delivery and federation strategy, the responsibility matrix, the methods, procedures and standards it will follow, and the software and IT it will use. Under ISO 19650 the lead appointed party writes it with its task teams, first with the tender and then confirmed after appointment. Our 16-point BEP checklist goes through it section by section.
What does BEP stand for in BIM?
BIM execution plan. In the US you'll also see BxP or PxP (BIM project execution plan), German-speaking countries use BAP, Spain and Portugal PEB, and Italy PGI - they all describe the same document. Our Help Center lists BEP abbreviations around the world.
What's the difference between a pre-appointment and a post-appointment BEP?
The pre-appointment BEP goes in with the tender: it shows how the prospective team would meet the requirements, with the proposed people, strategy, high-level responsibility matrix and tools. Once appointed, the lead appointed party confirms it as the post-appointment BEP, alongside the detailed responsibility matrix and the MIDP. In Plannerly it's the same document grown up, not a second one written from scratch. The Level 3 lessons cover the pre-appointment BEP and the post-appointment BEP.
What goes in a BEP?
ISO 19650-2 lists the essentials: the people in the delivery team's information management function, the information delivery strategy (how the team will meet the client's requirements), the federation strategy, the high-level responsibility matrix, any proposed changes to the project's information production methods, procedures and standards, and the software, hardware and IT the team will use. Our 16-point BEP checklist breaks it down, and the UK BIM Framework's guidance on tendering and appointments goes deeper.
Who writes the BEP?
The lead appointed party - usually the main contractor or lead designer - writes it with every task team, because each team knows how it will deliver its own part. The appointing party, the client, sets the information requirements the BEP answers and reviews it. In Plannerly each section is assigned to the person who writes it, and everyone else comments on it rather than emailing marked-up PDFs.
Is there a free BEP template?
Yes. The BEP template gives you an ISO 19650 BEP to fill in on a free Plannerly account, and the BEP Survival Kit on this page adds our pre- and post-appointment BEP PDFs from the free training. Start from the template, or import your own BEP from Word and keep its structure. Our ISO 19650 templates page has the EIR, OIR and AIR to go with it.
Can I see a BEP example?
The two BEP PDFs in the kit come from our free ISO 19650 training: one on the pre-appointment BEP, one on the post-appointment BEP. The Level 3 lesson Pre-Contract/Appointment BEP builds one on screen, and Episode 2's replay shows a BEP being reviewed and agreed on a real project.
Why is the BEP important in BIM?
Because it's the agreement on how information will be produced, checked and shared before anyone starts modelling. Without one, every team works to its own standards, file names and software versions, and the problems show up as rework at coordination or missing data at handover. A BEP only helps if people read it - which is why it should be short enough to use, owned section by section, and live rather than a PDF from tender day. More in the top 5 reasons you need a BEP.
Can I export the BEP to PDF or Word?
Yes. Export it as a PDF on any plan, or as a Word document on Pro, with a cover page, a linked contents page, a team page built from each person's profile and, if you like, the scope's grid and timeline. On Free, PDFs carry Plannerly branding; on Pro they carry yours. See how to export a document.
Can AI write my BEP?
It can help you write it. AI Expand turns your notes into structured sections and AI Correct tidies your wording, and you edit everything it writes, so the BEP stays yours - see how AI Expand works. If you're answering a client's EIR, EIR to BEP with AI shows the next step.
Can my task teams write their own sections?
Yes, on Pro: editors and viewers are unlimited, so each team writes its own sections. On Free you're the editor, and everyone you invite can view shared sections and comment on them. The 14-day Pro trial needs no card and has nothing to cancel. Compare the plans.
Is Plannerly BEP software?
It's where the BEP is written, agreed and kept live, alongside the scope, the delivery plan and the model checks that show whether the team is doing what the BEP says. See Plannerly for BIM execution plans.
