The problem

Why the design team's plan is out of date by the next issue

Sound familiar?

One person writes the whole BEP, and nobody reads it

You write the BEP alone, chase each consultant for its section, then issue a PDF that's out of date by the next design change. Nobody is sure who models what to which level, and missing data turns up when the client checks. The jobs below fix that, in order.

Your jobs, in order

The ISO 19650 jobs a design team meets, in the order you meet them

Set the information requirements

Stop modelling what nobody asked for. See what the client needs for each element at each stage, with the rule that checks it, before anyone starts modelling.

Step 1Episode 3

Turn the EIR into a BEP with AI

Answering the client's EIR for the whole design team eats the tender period. AI drafts each BEP section from the requirement it answers, and each consultant agrees its own part.

Step 2

Write the BEP

Stop chasing consultants for their sections. Each one writes and agrees its own part in one place, and the PDF you issue is always the current version.

Step 3

Scope LOD and LOIN at scale

Model only what each stage needs. Agree the level of detail and information for every element with your consultants, on one grid they can all see.

Step 4

Run the MIDP

Get the design programme out of your inbox. Every consultant's TIDP in one MIDP: each model and drawing named, owned and dated, agreed in the open.

Step 5Episode 1

Agree the RACI

Settle who designs what before the first model, not at the first clash. Each consultant signs a contract with only its own deliverables and sections.

Step 6Episode 2

Check every model with IDS

Know your models meet the client's requirements before each issue. Check yours and your consultants' automatically, and see which property is missing on which element.

Step 7

Connect your CDE

Keep working where you model. Files your team shares in ACC or BIM 360 that match a request fill it in the plan - no download, rename and upload.

Step 8Episode 4

Make it your company standard

Stop rebuilding the BEP for every job. Keep your best BEP, responsibility matrix and scope as templates, and start each new project from them.

Step 9

Surviving the seven CDEs

Connect them. Keep them in step. Stop re-uploading. Most projects run more than one common data environment, so the single source of truth quietly becomes several and you spend your week re-uploading. How to keep every CDE in step with the agreed plan, so delivered files check themselves off and the dashboards move on their own.

Questions

BIM management for design teams: your questions, answered

What does ISO 19650 ask of a design team?
Each design firm is an appointed party with one or more task teams. Each task team writes its TIDP - the information it will deliver, when and to what level - and the lead appointed party, often the lead designer, combines them into the MIDP and the delivery team's BEP, then checks the information before it's shared with the client. The free lesson on creating the delivery team's BEP walks through it, and the MIDP and TIDP guide explains each line.
How do we agree who models what with our consultants?
Put every element and milestone on one grid, set the level of detail and information each one needs at each stage, and give every cell one owner and a date. Each consultant sees its own work package, and the grid exports to PDF for signature, to Excel or as an IDS file. Scope LOD and LOIN at scale, and LOD, LOIN and LOA explained.
Can each consultant write its own section of the BEP?
Yes. Assign each section to the person who knows it, choose which teams see each document, and keep comments and suggestions on the section rather than in email. Share sections for review with a deadline, accept or reject suggestions, then publish it, export it or send it for e-signature. Write the BEP, and how to create a BEP in Plannerly.
Does Plannerly work with Revit?
Yes, in two ways. Verify shows the views you publish from Revit and checks the linked elements against your requirements; when the model lives in BIM 360 or ACC, new versions come across by themselves. To push requirements into Revit families, export them from Plannerly to Excel and load them with the Revit plug-in from the Autodesk App Store. Revit models in Verify, and Revit integration.
Can we check our models before we issue them?
Yes. Check your own and your consultants' models against the client's requirements in Verify, in any of over 60 model file formats, and see exactly which property is missing on which element. Models are checked automatically and the charts update as teams fix what failed. Verify checks model information, not geometry: it isn't a clash detection tool yet. The 14-day Pro trial includes model checking. Model checking with IDS.
What's the difference between LOD and LOIN?
LOD (level of development) describes how far an element's geometry and information have developed, usually on the BIMForum scale. LOIN (level of information need, ISO 7817) describes the geometry, information and documentation needed for a particular purpose at a particular milestone, so it starts from why the information is needed. Many projects use both. Level of information need explained, and the BIMForum LOD specification.
Can we reuse our BEP on the next project?
Yes. Keep your best BEP, responsibility matrix and scope in a template project, put SmartFields where each project's details go, and start each new project from it. Make it your company standard, and the BEP template.
Do our consultants pay to join?
No. Every consultant you invite joins at no cost to them. On Pro, editors and viewers are unlimited and you pay per project, not per seat; on Free you're the editor and everyone you invite can view and comment. Compare the plans.
