Use case - Teach ISO 19650

Teach ISO 19650 with a working plan

To teach ISO 19650 so it sticks, let students run it: define the EIR, build the BEP and MIDP, check the models and sign off the handover in a real project. Plannerly is free for universities, with a guest lecture, a 4-5 hour assignment with marking criteria and a free class Q&A.

Free for universities and colleges. Students can also practise on a free account.

The problem

Students can recite the acronyms but can't run a project

Sound familiar?

ISO 19650 taught as a diagram on a slide

Students learn OIR, EIR, BEP and MIDP as words for an exam, then meet their first project and can't say who agrees what, or who signs for it. This lecture shows how the pieces connect in a real project; the assignment then has students do it.

How it works

How to teach ISO 19650 with Plannerly, step by step

  1. Register your course

A professor or course leader registers the course for free education access, takes a short self-paced course on the basics, and has a quick setup call with us. Students can't register themselves.

Free access for the whole class
  2. Show the guest lecture

Watch ISO 19650 Made Practical together in class, or share it beforehand. It shows why information management matters and how requirements, responsibilities and checking connect in a real project.

The whole workflow seen end to end
  3. Set the assignment

Students work through four stages - define the EIR, develop the BEP and MIDP, verify the models, complete the handover - alone or in teams. About 4-5 hours, with marking criteria included.

    Work you mark inside Plannerly
  4. Book the class Q&A

Invite our team for a free one-hour live Q&A after the lecture, during the assignment or after submission. Collect your class's questions first, so the hour goes where they need it.

How other educators teach ISO 19650 with Plannerly

An MSc module that went from elective to core with every student certified, a national programme in Croatia that trained 1,000+ students without waiting for a mandate, and a graduate who went from architecture to BIM coordinator.

How LSBU embedded Plannerly into their construction curriculum

London South Bank University · MSc education

Dr. Zulfikar Adamu integrated Plannerly certification into MSc coursework, achieving 100% student completion in 1-2 days. The module grew from an elective to a mandatory core across two programmes with 70+ students per cohort.

If every university that teaches construction introduces Plannerly, in three to four years you have an army of graduates who know how to implement ISO 19650 properly.

Without waiting for a government mandate, built a national BIM education program using Plannerly as the central hub for templates, learning, and live project workflows.

We didn't wait for a mandate. We just started with education, templates, and real projects.

Many software companies get this wrong. They don't create content or videos. You can't ask me to bring your tool into my curriculum when there's nothing for students to learn from. Plannerly has all of that.

Questions

Teaching ISO 19650: your questions, answered

How do you teach ISO 19650 in practice?
Let students run the process rather than memorise it. Start with a short introduction or the guest lecture, then have them work through a real project: define the exchange information requirements, develop the BEP and MIDP, verify the models against the requirements and complete the handover. Each stage produces something you can mark, and each depends on the last, which is the point of ISO 19650. The professor guide and ISO 19650 explained.
Is Plannerly free for universities?
Yes, for official universities and education programmes. A professor or course leader registers the course, takes a short self-paced course on the basics and has a quick setup call with our team. Students then work in Plannerly for their coursework at no cost. How education access works.
How long does the assignment take?
Around 4-5 hours of focused work, in one sitting or spread across sessions. A basic introduction to ISO 19650 is enough to start: the step-by-step instructions, screenshots and walkthrough videos teach the rest. The assignment, stage by stage.
Can students work in groups?
Yes. The assignment is designed for individual submission, and students can also work in teams, taking roles such as appointing party, lead appointed party and appointed party. Individuals can work on a free Plannerly account; shared team projects need an Education Workspace, which we set up when you register your course. Register your course.
How is the assignment marked?
Marking criteria for all four stages are included, with Distinction, Merit, Pass and Fail bands. Students invite you into their Plannerly projects, so you mark the work where it was done. The professor guide includes an editable student brief for your module name, code and deadline. Get the professor guide.
Can students sign up on their own?
Not for free education access: a professor or course leader registers the class. Students can still open a free Plannerly account to practise and take the free courses with certificates. Options for students.
Can students upload their own BIM models?
Education accounts include demo projects and example models to check, the same for everyone. Uploading and processing your own models is part of Pro, and a student can start a 14-day Pro trial from a free account for a thesis or final project. Models in education accounts.
Do students get a certificate?
Yes. Every free Plannerly course ends with a certificate, from Level 1 BIM Management Basics to Level 3 ISO 19650 Expert, so students leave with something to show an employer as well as the assignment. At LSBU, every MSc student completed the certification. See the courses.
Can someone from Plannerly talk to my class?
Yes. Show the recorded guest lecture, ISO 19650 Made Practical, in class or as preparation, then book a free one-hour live Q&A with our team for after the lecture, during the assignment or after submission. See the Teaching Hub, or register your course.
How do I add students to my class?
Create a project, add a team and invite students by email as Manager, Editor or Viewer, or a custom role. A workspace per semester keeps classes apart, and a teaching assistant can manage invitations for you. Step by step.
