Stop chasing task teams to keep the MIDP up to date

A MIDP (master information delivery plan) is the ISO 19650 plan of every information container a delivery team will produce: what it is, who produces it, when, and to what level of information need. It combines every task team's TIDP. This free template gives you the structure; Plannerly keeps it agreed and current.

Free plan, no card needed. Every task team you invite joins free.

Sound familiar?

Why the MIDP spreadsheet stops being true by week three

The problem

Hundreds of rows at kick-off, and nobody's answer by week three

Each task team sends its TIDP in its own format. You merge them into one sheet, it's out of date by the next meeting, and you become the reminder system. The template fixes the structure. An owner who agreed to every line fixes the chasing.

What is a MIDP?

The master information delivery plan (MIDP) is the plan of every information container a delivery team will produce on an ISO 19650 project: each model, drawing, schedule and report, who produces it, when it's due and what it must contain. The lead appointed party builds it by bringing together every task team's TIDP, checks that they fit together, and keeps it current as the project runs. It's set out in ISO 19650-2, and the UK BIM Framework's guidance on information delivery planning explains it in plain terms.

What goes in the MIDP template

One line per information container, and on every line:

  • the container's name and title, following the project's naming convention;
  • the task team that produces it, and the person responsible;
  • its level of information need - how much geometry, data and documentation it carries;
  • any predecessors or dependencies on other containers;
  • its estimated production time;
  • the information delivery milestone it's due at.

In Plannerly each line is also a file request, so delivered files land against the line they fulfil, and the line carries its own responsibility matrix roles.

MIDP or TIDP: which do you need?

Both. Each task team writes its TIDP for its own deliverables; the MIDP is all of them together, owned by the lead appointed party. In Plannerly they're the same records seen two ways - one team's lines, or every team's - so nothing is merged by hand. Our guide to the MIDP and TIDP goes deeper, and the MIDP use case shows the whole job.

How to use it

Fill in the MIDP template in four steps

  1. List every deliverable

    Paste the deliverables from your drawing registers, spreadsheets and emails. Each line becomes a named file request, with your naming convention applied.

    Every information container named
  2. Give each line an owner

    Assign one task team and a responsible person to every deliverable, set its milestone and dates on the timeline, and link the ones that depend on each other.

    Each task team's TIDP, from the same plan
  3. Get each team to agree

    Each team reviews only its own lines and settles questions in comments on the line. One click makes it a contract with just its deliverables, sent for e-signature.

    Every TIDP agreed and signed
  4. Track what arrives

    Delivered files fill their requests, reminders go out 7 days before a start and 3 days before a deadline, and the progress charts update automatically.

Questions

MIDP template questions, answered

What is a MIDP template?
A ready-made structure for the master information delivery plan: one line per information container, with its task team, responsible person, level of information need, dependencies, production time and delivery milestone. You fill it in from each task team's TIDP instead of designing the spreadsheet yourself. Our guide to the MIDP and TIDP explains what belongs on each line.
What should a MIDP include?
Every information container the delivery team will produce, and for each one: its name and title, who produces it, its level of information need, any predecessors or dependencies, its estimated production time and the delivery milestone it's due at. ISO 19650-2 sets this out, and the UK BIM Framework guidance on information delivery planning walks through it. The Level 3 lesson builds one on screen.
Who is responsible for the MIDP?
The lead appointed party - usually the main consultant or contractor - builds the MIDP from every task team's TIDP, checks the TIDPs fit together and keeps it up to date. Each task team stays responsible for its own TIDP. If you're writing yours, start from the TIDP template.
What's the difference between a MIDP and a TIDP?
Scope and owner. A TIDP covers one task team's deliverables and belongs to that team; the MIDP covers every team's, in one coordinated plan owned by the lead appointed party. In Plannerly they're the same records seen two ways, so you never merge them by hand. MIDP and TIDP, explained.
Can I download the MIDP template as a spreadsheet?
The free download on this page is a set of PDFs from our free ISO 19650 training: the MIDP step, the detailed responsibility matrix and the whole process on one page. The working template lives in Plannerly, where each line has an owner and a date and the plan updates as files arrive. Start free, and export a copy whenever you need to issue one.
How do I keep the MIDP up to date?
Stop updating it by hand. Each line is a file request, so delivered files fill it; reminders go to the team in the app 7 days before a start, 3 days before a deadline and when a line is overdue, and you can adjust them; and the progress charts update automatically. Filter the charts by work package to see one team's progress.
Will the MIDP change in the ISO 19650 revision?
The proposed revision may rename it - the MIDP and TIDPs could become an information production schedule - but the work stays the same: every deliverable named, owned, dated and agreed. What the proposed revision changes, and the delivery plan workflow already set up for it.
