BIM execution plan (BEP)

BIM execution plan (BEP): what it is and how to write one

A BIM execution plan (BEP) is the delivery team's plan for managing information on a project: who produces what, to which standards, with which tools, and how it meets the client's requirements. ISO 19650 asks for one with the tender and a confirmed one after appointment.

Free plan, no card. The template is in the Library in Plannerly Docs.

What goes in a BEP

Every BEP answers the client's exchange information requirements (EIR). Whichever template you start from, it needs these five parts:

Who's who

The delivery team's information management roles: the lead appointed party, each task team and, once appointed, the people by name.

How information will be delivered

The information delivery strategy, which is how the team will meet the EIR, and the federation strategy, which is how the models are split up and brought together.

Standards, methods and procedures

Naming and classification, the level of information need, and how information is checked, shared and approved in the common data environment.

Software and IT

The tools each task team uses, their versions, and the formats information is exchanged in, such as IFC and BCF.

Pre-appointment or post-appointment BEP?

ISO 19650-2 asks for the BEP twice. It's one document growing up, not two documents:

Pre-appointment BEP Post-appointment BEP
When With the tender Once the team is appointed, before the work starts
What it is A proposal: how the team would meet the EIR The agreed plan the team works to
People Proposed roles A named person in every role
Responsibilities A high-level responsibility matrix The detailed matrix, the MIDP and every TIDP
Afterwards Compared with the other bids Kept up to date as the project changes

Two free lessons go through both: the pre-appointment BEP and the delivery team's BEP.

Your BEP checklist

Before you send it, check that:

  • every requirement in the EIR has an answer, in the same order;
  • every deliverable has one accountable task team;
  • the milestones match the client's information exchange dates;
  • each deliverable's level of information need is set, rather than LOD 300 for everything;
  • naming and classification follow the project's information standard;
  • the federation strategy says how the models are split and combined;
  • the common data environment workflow says who checks, shares and approves information;
  • the software list gives versions and exchange formats;
  • how models will be checked against the requirements is written down (BIM checking);
  • every task team has reviewed and agreed its own part.

Write the BEP with your teams, not for them

Start from the template

Open the ISO 19650 BEP template, not a blank page

The BEP template in the Library in Plannerly Docs already has the pre- and post-appointment sections. SmartFields fill in the project's details once, and AI can draft a first version of any section for you to check and edit.

Agree it

Give every section an owner, then agree it

Assign each section to the team that knows it, with a deadline. Teams suggest and comment, every change is kept in the version history, and the agreed BEP is signed with e-signatures. Bringing every task team in as an editor is part of Pro, which you can try free for 14 days.

Questions

BIM execution plan questions, answered

What is a BIM execution plan (BEP)?
The delivery team's plan for managing information on a project. It explains how the team will meet the client's information requirements: who holds the information management roles, the delivery and federation strategy, the responsibility matrix, the standards, methods and procedures, and the software it will use. Under ISO 19650-2 the lead appointed party writes it with its task teams.
What does BEP stand for in BIM?
BIM execution plan. You'll also see BxP or PxP (BIM project execution plan) in the US, BAP in German-speaking countries, PEB in Spain and Portugal and PGI in Italy: they all describe the same document. Our Help Center lists BEP abbreviations around the world.
Who writes the BEP?
The lead appointed party, with its task teams: each team writes and agrees the parts it's responsible for. The client, as the appointing party, sets what the BEP must answer in its EIR and checks the BEP against it. In Plannerly every section can have its own owner and deadline. How to create a BEP in Plannerly.
What's the difference between the EIR and the BEP?
The EIR is the client's question: what information it needs, to what level and by when. The BEP is the delivery team's answer: how it will deliver that information. Write the BEP in the same order as the EIR, so every requirement has a visible answer. The EIR template.
Is there a free BEP template?
Yes. The BEP template has the pre- and post-appointment sections ISO 19650 expects, and it's in the Library in Plannerly Docs on the Free plan. Start free, open it and fill it in for your project.
Can AI write the BEP for me?
It can write a first draft. In Plannerly, AI can draft a section from the client's EIR for you to check and edit, so you start from something rather than a blank page. The plan you agree still has to be your team's own. Turn the EIR into a BEP with AI.
